The Evolution Of Honeyfunds

It was only a few years ago that the talk of honeymoon registries was circling the wedding industry.

It was bold and it created quite a stir. The online honeymoon registry allowed for brides and grooms to create a unique registry with which they would let their friends and family know what they actually needed or wanted as a wedding gift.

This was a natural progression. But, the wedding industry had not kept up with the times. Society was well past the years of two lovesick kids, barely out of high school getting married with nothing to their name but a few beach towels and their mom’s old sofa. People who intended to spend their lives together had moved in together for a test run. People had long since stopped whispering when an unmarried woman had a baby shower before she had a wedding shower.

By the time most couples say “I do” they already did and they were okay with that. However, in the area of weddings, couples were still expected to pick out a linen set and a china pattern and register it at the finest department stores.  Then came Honeyfund.

The scandal

Honeyfund created an online registry in 2005 that was custom made for the new age bride and groom. They could add registries from stores, or they could ask for funds for their honeymoon. They may ask for an upgrade at the hotel or a moonlit dinner on a riverboat.

Wedding publications made their disapproval known. How rude for someone to imply that they expected anyone to help with their honeymoon. It was unheard of. These new-age couples should shut down their accounts and take their 6 toaster ovens and go home!

But it didn’t work. Couples were willing to take the chance of being called rude. They stuck to their guns and soon wedding registries began popping up everywhere. Eventually, the wedding pros caught on and began giving tips on how to use the new online wedding registries which were really their idea in the first place.

Once again the hands of time have turned

Since those early days and the wonderful success of the Honeyfund, couples have again begun to push the envelope. It is refreshing to see today’s couple letting their loved ones in for a personal look into their lives. The requests being added to the Honeyfund registry are changing.

Here are a few recent entries:

  • Maid Service
    • Today’s couple is busy. They have full lives and they want a gift that will help them enjoy it. Asking for a 1 year, weekly house cleaning is a wonderful gift.
  • Pre-School tuition
    • It is no secret that the best pre-schools are filled up at least a year in advance. If the couple is on the waiting list, they may ask for funds to pay the tuition so they are ready when they get the call. This is an investment in their future.
  • Savings bonds
    • Investing in a savings bond makes sense. The gift giver can feel good about a gift that will grow with time and the couple can feel good about saving for their future.
  • Marathons, competitions, classes
    • There is no better gift than fueling someone’s passion. A runner or biker may have a lifelong dream of bicycling across France or climbing Mount Fuji.

These are just a few unusual ideas that are showing up on Honeyfund accounts. If you are still unsure, meet the couple in the middle and give them a Honeyfund gift card. Let them decide where to apply it.
