The Best Things to Eat in the Lead-Up to Your Wedding for a Happy Tummy
Looking for the perfect pre-wedding diet to feel your best on the big day? This guide covers the best foods to eat before your wedding for a happy tummy, glowing skin, and steady energy.
Invitations are sent, dress fittings are done, and the only thing left is to actually feel amazing on the big day. But let’s be real—the whole ‘wedding diet’ talk can be confusing and stressful. In this guide, I’m skipping the extreme detox teas and miserable meal plans. Instead, I’ll share delicious, gut-friendly foods that will keep you energized, bloat-free, and actually excited about eating well before your wedding. Now, we all know that eating fast food every day probably isn’t the best idea, but what exactly should you be eating?
Well, you probably don’t want to take too many risks in the lead-up to your wedding day. It’s important to strike a balance. In this article, I’m not going to tell you to eat nothing but grass and celery; we want you to enjoy your food. The items on this list are, in many ways, supplementary and are aimed at promoting good health and wellbeing – specifically for your digestive system.
So let’s take a look at some of the best foods to eat before the wedding day for a happy tummy.
Start Your Day With a Fibre-Rich Breakfast
Kickstart the day with a balanced breakfast that sets the tone moving forward. Oats are a solid pick because they’re crammed full of soluble fibre that keeps everything moving smoothly down there. On top of that, oats are filled with slow-release carbohydrates, so this breakfast will also keep you energised all the way through to lunch.
To get the most out of your oaty breakfast, try topping it with fresh fruit, like strawberries, blueberries and a sliced banana. For some extra digestive goodness, I’d also recommend sprinkling a palmful of chia seeds in too, as they’ll help promote good heart health while lowering digestive inflammation.
If you aren’t a huge fan of oats, then whole-grain toast with some smashed avocado or a bowl of natural yoghurt with berries and flax seeds will also give you a nutritious start to the day.
Embrace Protein for Lasting Energy
Do your best not to listen to the naysayers out there. No, you won’t look like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in your wedding dress if you increase your protein intake in the run-up to the big day.
Protein plays an important role in – yes, maintaining muscle – but also in supporting a lot of essential processes in the body. I’m not recommending that you kickstart a bulking phase or anything of the sort; all you need to do is include a source of protein in all of your meals that will leave you feeling satiated in between meals.
Some good options out there include lean meats, like chicken and turkey, but don’t sleep on fish, like salmon fillets, and who could forget the humble yet versatile egg? Including a good source of lean protein in every meal is one of the simplest ways to stay satisfied and support your digestion in the run-up to the wedding.
Embrace Colourful Fruits and Vegetables
I hate to sound like Captain Obvious, but I think it’s worth saying: eat more fruit and vegetables. According to recent studies, only a small percentage of us are getting the daily recommended amount of fibre, which indicates to me that most of us just aren’t eating enough fruit and veg.
You don’t even need to commit to anything too intense. All I would do is add a portion of fruit or vegetables to existing meals and maybe add one meal per week that’s more legume-centric, like a delicious dahl.
What’s more, if it gets to around 3 p.m. — prime snacking hour — having some fruit around can come in very handy. A banana is great for satisfying cravings quickly, while a portion of strawberries is better if you’re more in the mood for something you can nibble over the course of half an hour. Adding more color to your plate is one of the easiest changes you can make for a happier tummy in the weeks before the wedding.
Include Probiotic Foods for Gut Balance
Lastly, probiotics are an excellent way to specifically boost your gut health — especially if it’s been inflamed and you need a quick win. Our microbiomes are full of helpful gut bacteria that support our bodies by breaking down our food and extracting vitamins and minerals, not to mention fending off nasty bacteria and pathogens.
Probiotics essentially work by giving your gut reinforcements in the form of millions of new good bacteria that can repopulate your system and help improve the diversity of the microbiome as a whole.
Let’s talk probiotics—specifically, kefir. You’ve probably seen it next to the yogurt in the grocery store, but did you know it’s actually more potent? Kefir yoghurts contains a much wider variety of beneficial bacteria and yeasts than regular yogurt, making it a powerhouse for reducing bloating and improving gut flora. If you’re new to it, start with just a small glass a day (your gut needs time to adjust!). And if dairy isn’t your thing, fermented veggies like sauerkraut or kimchi are excellent plant-based alternatives that pack the same probiotic punch.
